We're only a couple of weeks into 2026, but in that short time, I've become a real big fan of carrying around my Nintendo Switch 2 in this Hori Vault Case, part of the Pokémon Gengar and Mimikyu collection.
The Nintendo Switch 2 case isn't doing anything I haven't seen before. It's a hardshell case with some game and accessory storage, and has a handle on the top to make lugging it around a lot easier. But as a Pokémon fan of around 27 years and one with a preference for spooky types, it's the combined quality of what this case does right and the frighteningly good design that's made it one of my first favorite accessories I've tested this year.

Hori - Vault Case (Gengar & Mimikyu) - Gray | $29.99 at Best BuyHori's official Pokémon collections have the tendency to sell out fast, so you might struggle to find the Vault Case in stock for its $29.99 MSRP at first. It also launched as part of the Gengar and Mimikyu set late last year, so there's been plenty of time for fellow Pokémon fans to snatch it up in the US. In the UK, you can more easily find it for £26.99 from Amazon, or straight from the online Hori store. UK: £26.99 at Amazon
View DealThis Hori case is exactly what I like to see when it comes to licensed Switch 2 accessories and tech of any caliber. Instead of the R.D.S Industries Mario Kart World case available for $19.99 at Amazon US, which just reuses the same, boring boxart showing Mario and all the racers digging up the dirt on some race track, Hori put more thought into the design of this officially licensed case.

I've tested a ton of ugly Switch 2 cases, but this $30 flip-to-reveal Mario hard shell passes the vibe check
The hardshell exterior features brand-new art of Gengar and a line of adorable Mimiky surrounding him. It uses light, subdued pastel colors to make it look more delicate and unique. The light pastel purples and creamy yellows used in its design give a more professional and adult appeal, which feels right up my street as a 30-something-year-old fan.
With art this good, it's a shame it's only found on the top portion of the case. The bottom part drops any art for a plain purple colorway with no other Pokémon details to be found. A Gengar motif on the zippers, or even a logo on the back, would have tied it altogether. At least the interior isn't all black like plenty of other licensed cases I've looked at in the past. The internal flap, which can store up to 10 physical games, features the same pastel color, as does the mesh accessory pocket above it.
It's a simple choice, but the red of the Switch 2 carts contrasts nicely with the purple, and I like how it ties into the Gengar and ghost-type theming of the case. I'm also a fan of its construction, as Hori made the simple yet handy decision to add a tiny velcro strap to keep the game flap secure when opening the case. Any time you want to pull up the game storage, the overhang of the mesh pocket can be used to keep it up and out of the way. I'm not entirely sure if that was it's itnention, but I'm glad Hori included it either way.
Of all the Hori Gengar and Mimikyu products and Switch 2 cases out there, this case isn't the most feature-full (the Belkin Charging Case still wins that award), but it's definitely earned a spot as one of my favorite-looking Switch 2 cases on the market today. Naturally, you have to be a Pokémon fan that's privy to Ghost Types to get the most enjoyment from it, but my little over a week lugging around my Ninty handheld in it has been a joy, and has me eagerly awaiting to test the entire collection later in the year.

It features a range of accessories that combine the iconic Gen 1 Pokémon with a dainty aesthetic that feels equally fitting for adult fans and collectors. I've been fortunate enough to be supplied with some of the Eevee accessories, so check back in to see how I get on with the collection, and the Gengar and Mimikyo Switch 2 goodies if you're as keen to Poké-ify your Switch 2 setup this new year as much as I am.

I could hook up a NES and SNES to a telly, without instructions, before I could walk. Even now, nothing is more exciting then taking a console, or handheld, out the box for the first time and setting it up. This obsession transformed into a love of games and game music, which lead to my music degree and dream of becoming the Scottish Nobuo Uematsu. After sharing my love of games through music, I began to share my love through words on sites like TechRadar and iMore. This lead to becoming a Hardware staff writer for PCGamesN, and later the Senior Tech Writer for Dexerto, covering all things Steam Deck, PlayStation and Nintendo. With that experience, I was able to level up as Hardware Editor for GamesRadar+, where I'm still just as Nintendo, PlayStation and gaming tech obsessed as ever.
