You'll need to find copper ore in Hytale once you've got the basic tools that get you started. This metal and its ingots are essential for your core crafting, once you have a workbench and a building workbench set up. You'll need it to improve your stone weapons, as well as being necessary to build things like a Blacksmith's Anvil and Armorer's workbench, and many of the things they unlock.
Trouble is, much like Hytale plant fiber, if you don't know what you're looking for, or where to go, you won't have much of a clue where to even begin. So let me explain everything you need to find and gather copper.
How to get copper in Hytale
It should come as no surprise that if you want to get copper in Hytale, you'll need to mine it. There's no great art to this really - just pick a good spot and start digging down. Make sure you bring plenty of torches, or the materials to craft them, as it gets dark quick and you'll need the light. Also make sure you think about how you're going to get back up again, and dig a stairway down, rather than a hole.

Once you've been digging a while you'll encounter one of two things: you'll either dig your way into a cavern, or find the knobbly angular protrusions of a block with ore in it. If it's orange it's copper, and if it's grey it's iron. More importantly, if you do find either ore, you're on or near a cavern, so dig around to find it.
Once inside a cavern, you'll have to watch out for a couple of things. Firstly, the distant glimmer of ore, which you'll see in the walls and roof. And, secondly, spiders. Massive spiders. Really big spiders. There are other monsters as well but I've mostly found spiders, given away by the copious webs you'll see around when you get near.
Depending on where the copper is you might have to build up to reach it, but by the time you've reached a cavern you should have plenty of rock to use. Gather everything you can and then head back up. Assuming you placed plenty of torches on your way down it'll just be a case of following the light home.
Very occasionally you'll see copper, or any other ore, just sticking out the side of a hill or mountain as you explore. That's a handy extra if you find it but not much use as a viable gathering tactic. You'll also be able to get both ore and ingots from chests and other loot. Again, useful but not reliable.

You'll also need charcoal to power it, which you can get simply by running a campfire (with or without food) and burning sticks.
